NEW + IMPROVED ID

For our design assignment, we had to create a new ID. The first task was to find the right measurement so that the new ID would be 300% the size of our original IDs. Our ID's have a width of 2.12 inches and a heigh of 3.34 inches, so I multiplied both of these by three to get a 300% increase for the new ID, which has a width of 6.38 inches and a height of 10.04 inches.

Once I had the dimensions, I started to look for inspiration. I started with the obvious, which was our actual ID. I put on the back on my new ID all the conditions and the black strip on the back of our old ones. Then, I decided that I liked a full body picture instead of a mug shot. Since the back of our school IDs are so boring, I wanted to make the new one a lot more interesting, and that is why I split myself and half and put one half on the front and the other on the back.

This is where I hit a little road block, I needed more inspiration. I started looking into other forms of identification like driver's license and passports. I like the official and simple look of government identification forms. All of these of course list your name, birthday, and address. However, I didn't want to just slap all this on there. Especially in an age where privacy, or lack there of, is becoming such an issue, I didn't want to exploit mine on my new ID. So, I started looking into alternatives.

For my name, I came up with this idea after going to a open mic night. I thought that it would be really cool if the school had voice recognition software. Not only would this protect the campus because everyone's voice is different and extremely hard to mimic, but it also makes photos more of a formality than anything. So, I recorded my voice saying my name and took the soundwaves with some added color and put that onto the back of my ID.

One thing that I love to learn about is astrology and zodiac signs, which is how I ended up getting my birthday and address onto my ID. However, I didn't want to put a picture of my zodiac sign, a scorpion, on my ID because it still didn't make the mark. I then remembered a movie that I watched, Thor, in which one of the main characters tracked the position of starts every night to see what was going on up in the universe that we know so little about. With a new idea, I turned to the internet and looked up "star map". With                      , I was able to put in my birthday and location of birth, and see what constellation was overhead when I was born: The Spiral (Whirlpool) Nebula (M51 Canes Venatici). I then found a picture of this star and the constellation that it is a part of and used it as the background of my id. Theoretically, with the ID you could then see when and where they were born.

Finally, the last aspect of my ID that I added was the finger prints, mostly because I thought it was cool and added to the government/official aesthetic that I was going for.
