Lyrics

"American Oxygen"- Rihanna

The music video for American Oxygen, directed by                                  ,                                , and the singer herself, is far different from any of the other music videos Rihanna has released previously. This music video focuses much more on the history, good and bad, of the United States rather than the singer's well known sex appeal. In a culture where sex sells, it is clear that the intent is message over money. The music video takes  a home movie approach to piecing together the good and bad of our history... clips of President Obama's inauguration, 9/11, protests over immigration and police brutality, excerpts from Martin Luther King Jr. speeches, the coverage of his assassination, space exploration and American classics like baseball games and parades. With the singer herself proclaiming that the video was, "one of the most important I've made to date," there's no doubt that everyone was eager to watch. After viewing, it is clear that Rihanna delivered exactly what she promised: a powerful representation of the American Dream... the good, the bad, and everything in between.

Breathe out, breathe in
American oxygen
Every breath I breathe
Chasin' this American Dream
We sweat for a nickel and a dime
Turn it into an empire
Breathe in, this feeling
American, American oxygen

American oxygen
Breathe in, this feeling
American, American Oxygen

Oh say can you see, this is the American Dream
Young girl, hustlin'
On the other side of the ocean
You can be anything at all
In America, America
I say, can't you see
Just close your eyes and breathe

Breathe out, breathe in
American oxygen
Every breath I breathe
Chasin' this American Dream
We sweat for a nickel and a dime
Turn it into an empire
Breathe in, this feeling
American, American oxygen

American oxygen
Breathe in, this feeling
American, American Oxygen

American oxygen
Breathe in, this feeling
American, American Oxygen

Oh say can you see, this is the American Dream
Young boy, hustlin'
Tryna get the wheels in motion
But he can be anything at all
In America, America
I say, can't you see
Just close your eyes and breathe

Breathe out, breathe in
American oxygen
Every breath I breathe
Chasin' this American Dream
We sweat for a nickel and a dime
Turn it into an empire
Breathe in, this feeling
American, American oxygen

This is the new America
We are the new America
This is the new America
We are the new America
This is the new America
We are the new America
This is the new America
We are the new America

Breathe out, breathe in

American oxygen
Every breath I breathe
Chasin' this American Dream
We sweat for a nickel and a dime
Turn it into an empire
Breathe in, this feeling
American, American oxygen

American oxygen
Breathe in, this feeling
American, American Oxygen

American oxygen
Breathe in, this feeling
American, American Oxygen

This is the new America
We are the new America
This is the new America
We are the new America

When told in class to choose my favorite song for a project I immediately freaked out... this was no small task. I knew that I was dying to do a                  song, but which one? Trying to take into consideration my all time favorites, where I am at in my life, which songs I just like, how songs make me feel, it is safe to say that I was lost. I decided to focus primarily on where I am  in my life right now and that brought me to my decision: American Oxygen. American Oxygen was released in 2015 as a precursor to, but not part of, the artist's highly anticipated eighth studio album.

I chose this song because it always reminds me how lucky I am and how many opportunities there are out there. It is up to me to go out and grab them. It reinforces what my parents have told me since day one: anything is possible if you put your mind to it. Right now, school makes me nervous... new classes, new people, a new future... am I ready for this? But, then I hear this song and it transforms that fear into something else: excitement. I am excited for the challenge, the grind. It all makes it more rewarding in the end.

"American Oxygen" was co-written by Rihanna and                              , and produced by                       . Harris revealed to Billboard that the track started out as one of many ideas being bounced around between himself and Da Kid. Once Harris got the words, "breath out, breath in, American oxygen" both he and Da Kid knew that they had something that deserved to have time spent on it.

In the coming months, the two kept rewriting and altering versions of the song until they felt ready to pitch it. Harris even released a version of the song with his band,                             . Yet, when word came in that ultra-famous singer Rihanna was interested, all parties involved knew they had a dream team and knew something special was about to happen.

Rihanna became a co-writer of the track. As an immigrant herself, the lyrics to her spoke of coming to America and making something of oneself. Rihanna credits America for giving her all the success that she has today. While the lyrics have this special connection for her, Harris doesn't forget to point out that the song cannot be simplified to a single meaning.

The American Dream According to American and International Students

The American Dream According to American and International Students

For this project I chose to focus on the lyrics "turn it into an empire... breath out, breath in, American Oxygen" because for me they hold the most meaning and impact. They make me feel as though I really can do anything.. When thinking about how I wanted to handle this project I envisioned a documentary. I felt it remained true to the song and its music video. However, instead of doing a video I stuck with the 21st century trend of gifs, or moving pictures. Although nearly everyone has seen a gif on Facebook or tumblr, most don't know that              , the website for making gifs, has over 100 million daily users who send 1 billion gifs every day, according to             . I thought it was an interesting way to capture the essence of the lyrics that I was focusing on while simultaneously differing it from more typical documentaries. I opted to shoot with an iPhone over a camera because the style of the music video was very similar to a home movie and people take home movies these days with their phones.

I chose to specifically focus on eight people because the song was the precursor to Rihanna's eighth studio album. After taking the picture of each person, I asked them, "how would you describe the American dream in 3 or less words?"After I had the pictures and was making the gifs, by having the typing effects on their answer builds on the fact that our American Dreams, whatever they may be, are currently being written. We are deciding how our futures are changing in this very moment, and we ultimately will decide what will get written. I chose to use the black and white filter because I thought it brought more unity to the entire image as the different backgrounds with color can be a little more distracting in my opinion. However, I did add a colored filter to the colored version which definitely added unity, I just felt as thought the black and white was more effective.

Initially I only wanted to use pictures of international students because I thought I would get more interesting responses. However, I quickly changed my mind when I realized that the topic of the American Dream is up for debate with Americans as well. I was shocked to hear some of the responses from both international and American students. Overall, I am happy with the outcome. Not only have I been learning more about myself as an artist but as a person as well. These eight simple moving pictures along with the lyrics of the song shed light to the incredible divide in feelings toward the American government and American Dream.

CHANCE PROJECT

I decided to use this project as my Chance Project as well because the tone and direction of this entire project depended on chance... had I asked differed people it could have ended up entirely different. Just by chance my views started to shift and change about the American Dream because the reactions that I got from these eight people were so far from what I was expecting. I got the idea for the project from one of my favorite songs not knowing that in the end the project would actually be shaping me and changing my views of this country that a lot of us call home.
